Background of the Study
Proper nutrition is essential for healthy aging, yet many elderly individuals suffer from malnutrition due to poor dietary choices, lack of nutritional knowledge, and economic constraints (WHO, 2024). Community-based interventions have been recognized as effective strategies for educating elderly populations on balanced diets, healthy eating habits, and nutritional supplementation (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2024). These programs aim to enhance food security, improve dietary practices, and reduce nutrition-related health risks.
In Plateau State, malnutrition among the elderly is a growing concern, leading to increased cases of anemia, weakened immunity, and higher susceptibility to chronic diseases (Okafor & Musa, 2024). This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of community-based nutrition education programs in improving elderly dietary habits and overall health.
Statement of the Problem
Malnutrition among the elderly in Plateau State is a significant public health issue, resulting in higher morbidity and reduced quality of life (Okafor & Musa, 2024). Limited access to nutrition education and inadequate dietary choices contribute to poor health outcomes. Despite the existence of community-based interventions, their effectiveness in educating the elderly and improving dietary practices remains unclear.
This study seeks to assess the impact of community-based nutrition education programs and identify barriers to their success.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of community-based nutrition education programs for elderly individuals in Plateau State.
2. To assess changes in dietary habits and nutritional knowledge among elderly participants.
3. To identify challenges in implementing elderly nutrition education programs.
Research Questions
1. How effective are community-based nutrition education programs in improving elderly dietary habits?
2. What changes in nutritional knowledge and behavior occur after program participation?
3. What challenges affect the implementation of elderly nutrition education programs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Community-based nutrition education programs significantly improve elderly dietary habits.
2. Elderly individuals with higher nutrition awareness make healthier dietary choices.
3. Limited access to nutrition education negatively impacts elderly nutritional status.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly individuals in Plateau State who participate in community-based nutrition education programs. Limitations may include program variability, participant adherence, and accessibility challenges.
